Early Years Mathematics - Size comparison and Measurement

Objective: To teach children about size comparison (bigger/smaller) and measurement (length, width, and height).

Materials:

  • A variety of objects of different sizes (e.g. blocks, toys, containers, etc.)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Measuring tape or ruler

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes)
    • Greet the students and explain the purpose of the lesson.
    • Ask the students if they know what "bigger" and "smaller" mean.
    • Write the words "bigger" and "smaller" on the whiteboard.
  2. Size comparison activity (15 minutes)
    • Show the students a variety of objects and ask them to compare the size of each pair of objects.
    • Encourage the students to use the words "bigger" and "smaller" to describe the size comparison.
    • Repeat the activity several times, using different sets of objects each time.
  3. Measurement activity (15 minutes)
    • Show the students how to use a measuring tape or ruler to measure the length, width, and height of various objects.
    • Encourage the students to measure the objects on their own and to compare the measurements.
    • Repeat the activity several times, using different sets of objects each time.
  4. Closing (5 minutes)
    • Summarize what the students learned during the lesson.
    • Encourage the students to continue practicing size comparison and measurement at home.
    • Dismiss the students and thank them for their participation.
