Objective: To introduce basic counting and number recognition.
Materials:
- Number cards 1-10
- Counting objects (e.g. unifix cubes, counters, beans, etc.)
- Whiteboard and markers
Procedure:
- Introduction (5 minutes)
- Greet the students and explain the purpose of the lesson.
- Ask the students if they know what numbers are and what we use them for.
- Write the numbers 1 to 10 on the whiteboard.
- Counting activity (15 minutes)
- Show the students a set of counting objects and ask them to count along with you as you place each object on the table.
- Encourage the students to count out loud and to touch each object as they say the number.
- Repeat the activity several times, using different sets of objects each time.
- When the students are comfortable with counting, ask them to count a set of objects on their own.
- Number recognition (15 minutes)
- Hold up each number card and ask the students to identify the number.
- Encourage the students to say the number out loud.
- Once the students are confident with the numbers 1-10, ask them to hold up the number cards and you can call out the numbers for them to find.
- Repeat the activity several times.
- Closing (5 minutes)
- Summarize what the students learned during the lesson.
- Encourage the students to continue practicing counting and number recognition at home.
- Dismiss the students and thank them for their participation.
