Early Years Mathematics - Counting and Number recognition

Objective: To introduce basic counting and number recognition.

Materials:

  • Number cards 1-10
  • Counting objects (e.g. unifix cubes, counters, beans, etc.)
  • Whiteboard and markers

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes)
    • Greet the students and explain the purpose of the lesson.
    • Ask the students if they know what numbers are and what we use them for.
    • Write the numbers 1 to 10 on the whiteboard.
  2. Counting activity (15 minutes)
    • Show the students a set of counting objects and ask them to count along with you as you place each object on the table.
    • Encourage the students to count out loud and to touch each object as they say the number.
    • Repeat the activity several times, using different sets of objects each time.
    • When the students are comfortable with counting, ask them to count a set of objects on their own.
  3. Number recognition (15 minutes)
    • Hold up each number card and ask the students to identify the number.
    • Encourage the students to say the number out loud.
    • Once the students are confident with the numbers 1-10, ask them to hold up the number cards and you can call out the numbers for them to find.
    • Repeat the activity several times.
  4. Closing (5 minutes)
    • Summarize what the students learned during the lesson.
    • Encourage the students to continue practicing counting and number recognition at home.
    • Dismiss the students and thank them for their participation.
