Objective: To teach children about patterns and pattern recognition.
Materials:
- A variety of objects for making patterns (e.g. blocks, buttons, beads, etc.)
- Whiteboard and markers
Procedure:
- Introduction (5 minutes)
- Greet the students and explain the purpose of the lesson.
- Ask the students if they know what patterns are and what we use them for.
- Write the word "patterns" on the whiteboard.
- Pattern demonstration (10 minutes)
- Show the students several examples of simple patterns (e.g. AB, ABA, ABC, etc.) using the objects for making patterns.
- Encourage the students to identify the pattern and to describe it using words or symbols (e.g. "red, blue, red, blue" or "A, B, A, B").
- Repeat the activity several times, using different patterns each time.
- Pattern creation activity (15 minutes)
- Give each student a set of objects for making patterns and ask them to create their own pattern.
- Encourage the students to use their creativity and to try to make longer and more complex patterns.
- Once the students have created their patterns, ask them to show their pattern to the class and to describe it using words or symbols.
- Closing (5 minutes)
- Summarize what the students learned during the lesson.
- Encourage the students to continue practicing pattern recognition and creation at home.
- Dismiss the students and thank them for their participation.
