Duration: 1 hour
Objectives:
- To understand what probability is and its purpose
- To determine the probability of simple events
- To understand independent and dependent events
Materials:
- Whiteboard and markers
- Dice and coins
- Handout with practice problems
Introduction (10 minutes):
- Ask students if they have ever heard of probability and what they think it is
- Introduce probability as the study of chance and random events
- Explain that probability can be expressed as a fraction, decimal or percentage
Body (35 minutes):
- Provide examples of simple events (e.g. rolling a die, flipping a coin) and ask students to determine the probability of each event
- Discuss independent events (events that are not influenced by other events) and dependent events (events that are influenced by other events)
- Demonstrate how to find the probability of dependent events by multiplying the probabilities of the individual events
- Provide practice problems for students to solve in pairs or independently
Conclusion (15 minutes):
- Review the key concepts covered in the lesson
- Answer any questions students may have
- Assign homework (e.g. additional practice problems or a worksheet)
- Summarize what will be covered in the next lesson
Assessment:
- Observe students during the practice problems to assess understanding
- Collect and grade the homework to see how well students have retained the material
Note: This is just a sample lesson plan, and can be adjusted to fit the needs of your students and curriculum.
