Defence


Humans have several means of defense, including:

  6. Legal: Humans can seek protection through the legal system, such as by seeking restraining orders, filing lawsuits, or seeking police protection.

  7. Technological: Humans can use technology, such as security systems or personal safety devices, to defend themselves from physical harm.

These means of defence can overlap and interact with each other, providing humans with a complex and dynamic array of defences against danger and threats to their well-being. The most effective defence is often a combination of multiple means, used in a coordinated and strategic manner.




Psychological defence mechanisms are unconscious psychological strategies used by individuals to reduce anxiety and deal with unpleasant emotions or stressful situations. Here are some of the most common defence mechanisms:

  1. Denial: Refusing to acknowledge or accept reality or facts.

  2. Repression: Burying unpleasant thoughts, feelings or memories in the unconscious mind.

  3. Projection: Attributing one's own undesirable thoughts, feelings or motivations onto others.

  4. Displacement: Redirecting one's own unacceptable impulses or desires onto a less threatening target.

  5. Regression: Reverting to immature or childlike behavior in response to stress.

  6. Reaction formation: Converting one's own unacceptable impulses into their opposite.

  7. Intellectualization: Distancing oneself from an unpleasant reality by focusing on the intellectual or theoretical aspects of a situation.

  8. Sublimation: Channelling unpleasant desires or impulses into socially acceptable or even creative outlets.

  9. Rationalization: Justifying one's actions or feelings with logical explanations that are not necessarily based on reality.

  10. Compartmentalization: Keeping separate parts of one's life, personality or emotions separate from one another.

It's important to note that defence mechanisms are normal and everyone uses them to some extent, but excessive reliance on certain defence mechanisms can become problematic and interfere with healthy functioning.
