Early Years English - Shapes


Objective: To teach children about shapes and to develop their visual recognition and vocabulary skills.

Materials:

  • Shape cards (one for each shape, e.g. circle, square, triangle, etc.)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Objects of different shapes (e.g. blocks, toys, etc.)

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes)
    • Greet the students and explain the purpose of the lesson.
    • Ask the students if they know what shapes are.
    • Write the word "shapes" on the whiteboard.
  2. Shape recognition (10 minutes)
    • Show the students the set of shape cards and ask them to identify each shape as you hold up one card at a time.
    • Encourage the students to say the name of the shape and to listen to the sounds of the words.
    • Repeat the activity several times, using different sets of shape cards each time.
  3. Shape labeling (15 minutes)
    • Show the students the objects of different shapes and ask them to label each object with the name of the shape.
    • Encourage the students to say the name of the shape and to listen to the sounds of the words as they label the objects.
    • Repeat the activity several times, using different sets of objects each time.
  4. Closing (5 minutes)
    • Summarize what the students learned during the lesson.
    • Encourage the students to continue practicing shapes and to listen carefully to the sounds of words.
    • Dismiss the students and thank them for their participation.
