Early Years English - Alphabet and writing skills

Objective: To teach children about the alphabet and to develop their recognition and writing skills.

Materials:

  • A set of letter cards (one for each letter of the alphabet)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Paper and pencils for each student

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes)
    • Greet the students and explain the purpose of the lesson.
    • Ask the students if they know what the alphabet is.
    • Write the word "alphabet" on the whiteboard.
  2. Alphabet recognition (10 minutes)
    • Show the students the set of letter cards and ask them to identify each letter as you hold up one card at a time.
    • Encourage the students to say the name of the letter and to listen to the sounds that the letters make.
    • Repeat the activity several times, using different sets of letter cards each time.
  3. Alphabet writing (15 minutes)
    • Give each student a piece of paper and a pencil.
    • Show the students the set of letter cards and ask them to write each letter as you hold up one card at a time.
    • Encourage the students to say the name of the letter and to listen to the sounds that the letters make as they write.
    • Repeat the activity several times, using different sets of letter cards each time.
  4. Closing (5 minutes)
    • Summarize what the students learned during the lesson.
    • Encourage the students to continue practicing the alphabet and to listen carefully to the sounds of letters.
    • Dismiss the students and thank them for their participation.
